Program Note
The documentary that gave birth to the term ‘Filipino independent films’, it follows the director’s life in the country as he drives a jeep for a living. It depicts the conflict between traditional Filipino life and the life as a foreigner wandering around France and Germany with his jeep in search for a bigger, brighter world. Born Eric de Guia he renamed himself in the Filipino native language, director Kidlat Tahimik studies dual identities of Filipinos, as the nature of the Philippines contrasts to metal and concrete civilization of the West.

Eric de Guia (October 3, 1942), better known as Kidlat Tahimik, is a director, writer and actor whose films are commonly associated through their critiques of neocolonialism with the Third Cinema movement. In Tagalog, de Guia′s name "Kidlat Tahimik" translates to "quiet lightning".
