Program Note

A news unit broadcasts the defeat of a police battalion by five bank robbers, and the credibility of the police force drops to a nadir. The police vow to capture the robbers under the eye of the watchful media show. Ruthless criminals, old-fashioned cops, cunning officers confront each other in a crowded apartment building in broad daylight, which bares the coldness and inhumanity of this modern jungle. Cameras of reporters shoot as harsh as the guns of the police and the criminals, while To’s camerawork dazzles. Watch out for the first shot of the film, which was immediately labeled as not only the moment of Johnnie To, but also as the moment of cinema.

Johnnie TO

With a film career spanning over 25 years, Johnnie To is one of Hong Kong’s leading directors. Having achieved success with commercial films in the 80’s, To turned to more personal works in the mid-90s following the creation of his production company Milkyway Image. Election(2005) premiered in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and won To his third Best Director Award at the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards. In 2007, To's Triangle was an Official Selection at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, and Mad Detective was in Competition at Venice. His other films include All About Ah-long(1989), The Mission(1999), Throw Down(2004), Exiled(2006), and Vengeance(2009).
