Program Note
This is a liberal interpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s play [Little Eyolf] which he wrote in his later years. It is liberal overall, but remains loyal to the original to the names of the characters and the pessimistic theme stressing the futility of human relationships. When their only son dies from a sudden accident, a rift breaks Alfred and Rita’s seemingly trouble free marriage, and they rush headlong into catastrophe. As they do so, theirs and their friends’ lives are changed for good.
During this process, the characters’ entangled relationships are adversely displayed. The occasional viewer disgruntled by the excessive coincidences should recall the Spanish film′s certain dramatic quality. This is a characteristically Spanish drama born again as a fusion film with the help of the exotic Norwegian scenery, magical sound effects, and fast paced editing rhythm. It especially reminds us of the power of cross over editing. It makes one quite breathless. The skill with which the director draws out the international actors’ capacity is also superior. There’s also the bonus thrill of watching Bibi Andersson ([Persona]) who used to be one of Ingmar Bergman’s divas.
