Program Note
Late ’50s to early ’60s, when the space war between the Soviet and US was fiercely going on, a fifteen-year-old member of the communist party, Luciana, develops her ideals while living with her bourgeois stepfather, and among male chauvinists in a communist group in Rome. Her only friend is her brother Arturo, who dreams of going to space but is unable to do so due to his epilepsy.
This growth film of a teenage girl in cold war era of 1960s shows a cherished desire of the teenage girl for communism and the process of establishing self-identity as a woman. To excite delicate emotions from the audience, the film links an ideal world with space, the origin of many imaginations and the grand objective of men. It also shows the naive passion of Italian communists who believed that Gagarin’s accomplishment would change the world. Also, sexual discrimination within the communist party is suggested as an important issue in the film. The audience should pay attention to this unique, first feature film of Italian female director.
