[Kimjongilia], a flower known to be bred to celebrate North Korean leader Kim Jong Il′s 46th birthday,is used here ironically as the title of the film, in contrast to the stories the defectors tell. This film reveals stories told by survivors?defectors now living in the south?of North Korea’s prison camps, famine and systematic repression. Mixing archival material, propaganda, and reenactments of daily life in the North, the film illustrates how totalitarianism is created and ultimately maintained.
