Program Note
An artist and communist in his 70s, a lawyer who cherishes snails, a tired medical doctor, and a lonely businesswoman are old friends and regulars at the Black & White bar run by Faruk. When they hear that the bar will soon be shut down, this odd family does its best to change Faruk’s mind and keep the place where they share so many memories open. The film’s camerawork focuses on the friends both individually and as a close-knit group, and the filmmaker’s warm gaze emphasizes the value of everlasting friendship in its own consistent pace. The film’s use of photos as the sole means of remembering the dead is quite moving. (RHEE Soue-won)
