Program Note
In 2012, 82% of Singaporeans lived in apartments. This was accomplished by government efforts beginning in the 1960s to improve poor living conditions and address housing shortages. Not only did the efforts provide physical living space, but reflected political objectives, social composition and affected individual lifestyles. For example, the Singaporean government gave priority to conventional families when providing apartments and designing the blueprint. Based on detailed research, the
film follows three single women resisting the government’s housing policy. These independent women remodel their homes, defying the government’s ideological effort to maintain tradition and uniform appearances. Artist Tang remodels her home to double as a studio, middle-aged former model Amy makes showy decorations and uses the apartment hallways to throw parties and Mrs. Sim, a citizen of the first satellite city in Singapore, allows her home to become the headquarters for family gatherings. Fixed camera locations and consistent angles allow us to make detailed observations into the interior space of the apartments, while the repeating long shots provide geometric aesthetics to be enjoyed.
