Program Note
Challat of Tunis is a feminist film shedding light on the psychology of Arabic men through Challat, a violent criminal who slices women’s bottoms with a razor while riding on his motorcycle. It is a feature film, but resembles a documentary in its employment of interviews and shooting. This is a choice well suited to the theme of the film, considering the power of documentaries to bring a society’s hidden core to light. The hostility and animosity, as well as the “punishment” felt and imposed by Arabic men toward the modern women wearing increasingly revealing clothing (remember they have been veiled in the past hundreds of years) is a problem that must be approached from a religious/social perspective rather than at an individual level. The fact that the Challat exists not only in Tunisia, where the film is set, but also in Syria and Iraq suggests that this problem can be universally applied to Arabic men in general. The scene with the Challat themed video game makes clear the gravity of the situation. (RHEE Soue-won)
