Program Note
The Tavianis first English-language film is an ode to filmmaking and the Italian masters. After losing the family business, two brothers head to Hollywood to strike it rich, and wind up working on D.W. Griffiths’ landmark Intolerance making elephants. With a touch of revisionist history, the Tavianis suggest Cabiria inspired Griffith, but otherwise render a vivid portrait of early Hollywood and its burgeoning status as a one-industry town. Good Morning Babylon is one of the brothers’ most unabashedly lyrical films and plays like a modern fairy tale celebrating art.
Director

Paolo Taviani
Paolo and Vittorio Taviani were both born in San Miniato di Pisa, Italy, and studied at the University of Pisa; Paolo studied liberal arts and Vittorio law. The sons of an anti-facist lawyer, the brothers shot to international renown with their first short film, San Miniato, Luglio ′44(1954), about Nazi atrocities in their hometown. The brothers traditionally collaborate on screenplays and direct altering scenes on set. Known for a theatrical, quansi- neorealist technique. the Tavianis insist their films are dramatic, reinterpretations of history that focus on the Tuscan working class. Their joint filmography includes I sovversivi(1967), The Palme d′Or-winning Padre Padrone(1977), The Night of Son Loreuzo(1982), Chaos(1984), Good Morning Babylon(1987), Fiorile(1993), Risurrezione(2001), and The Lark Farm(2007).
