Program Note
Kang is a high school student who gets involved in a series of absurd chases through the decaying concrete jungle that is Taipei. With little interest in scholastics, Kang hangs around at Shimanding where he meets Ah Tze, a small-time hoodlum, who previously destroyed Kang’s father’s car. Hsu Li-kong, who was serving as an executive production director and as a vice-president at CMPC in ′90s, was beginning to search out new directors, and Ang Lee, Yi Chih-yen and I were making our first feature films at that time. If I were asked what relation I have with the Taiwanese New Wave, I would respond that I inherited the New Wave′s concept of emphasizing individual creativity. I made Rebels of the Neon God with the help of Hsu Li-kong who liked my TV dramas. The film presents several young guys from the slums and through them lets us meet all kind people wandering around every corner of Taipei. The film brought about two extreme responses, and it is somehow different from any other "Bildungsroman" films recollecting the youthful past. It describes the contemporary problems of Taiwanese youth in the present reality. (Tsai Ming-liang)
