Program Note
A technique of Tai Chi, the pushing of hands teaches one how to maintain one’s own balance while destroying an opponent’s. Mr. Chu, a retired Tai Chi master, leaves Beijing to live in the United States with his son Alex.
When I received “The Best Film” and “The Best Director” awards at the film school festival around the time I graduated from New York University, a big American management company proposed that I study further in US. I signed a contract with the company, expecting to develop myself during the period in US and yet wasted most of the time, about 5~6 years, at home just like Chinese immigrants in Pushing Hand.
I had already attended Art College for 3 years and Illinois University for 2 years and had gotten a bachelor′s degree there. This education in art and literature, before studying film production at New York University, helped me learn drama. The training still influences my film work both positively and negatively. (Ang Lee)
