Program Note
If you could only use one side of your brain, how would reality be altered?if at all? That is the central dilemma for Dexter, a young man with a seemingly mounting mass of problems that is explained when he’s told he’s had a stroke. With the right side of his brain damaged, Dexter’s reality begins to crumble. Everyone starts to look alike, and many start to look resemble Stella, his girlfriend. Now he must fine the one real Stella that he truly loves. In the tradition of great tragicomedies of Northern Europe, director Tan creates Dexter specifically to force him to deconstruct the reality he has created for himself in order to understand reality. Inspired by The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks, the film is a refined, mature examination of subjectivity.
