Program Note
Growing Up is the story of Hsiao-pi, and how he comes to the point in his life when he must, in fact, grow up. Hsiao-pi has had a turbulent childhood and youth; Running with a bad crowd and constantly getting into trouble with his school’s authorities. Things come to a head when Hsiao-pi flagrantly disrespects his stepfather, “Uncle” Pi.
Growing Up might be seen as a trifling work or a light sketch but it had an incredible explosive power. It was definitely expected to be boring at first, but we were determined to make it a success. We thought that the audience was now prepared to enjoy such a film, unlike the audience of five years earlier.
We continued to take great pains over the question of what kind cinema had a potentiality in Taiwan other than romantic comedy or kung fu film in those days. Facing the waning popularity of the then trendy movies and their sharp decline in box office, we had a confidence in making our film. In the end, we were proved right by the audiences which thronged to see the film in spite of heavy rain. The sight of so many people with umbrellas standing in front of the cinema dispelled our nervousness. (Chen Kun-hou)
