Program Note
Kun-cheng lives in a secluded cottage in the middle of nowhere with his parents, his young wife and their daughter. With familial expectations coming to bear on him, he only has his loving wife Ah Shiu as refuge. After being tragically separated from her, Kun-cheng’s attempts to totally remove himself from his old life and duties are scuttled when his family demands his attention again. I looked around numerous landscapes in the northwest expecting to find the proper location for my debut film, A Drifting Life, which is mainly set in a house, but I was not satisfied with what I saw. After that, the accidental sight of black roofing tiles and stonewalls I saw while on the way to my hometown to visit my parents′ grave reminded me of my childhood. I suddenly imagined a movie set in Taidong and it was stunning. We built an ordinary house to use as the set. I even made my staff live there, and as they raised a rooster, a cat and a dog, and made a bamboo basket there, the set became discolored with the rain and wind and sunlight. Thus it became an old, worn-out house in a natural way. We started shooting in the summer when cucumbers and pumpkins in a yard were growing nicely. (Lin Cheng-sheng)
