"Splendid Outing is one of representative Kim Soo-yong′s films in the 70s. He stepped into the modernist cinema experimenting new film language after Mist. The film deals with the issue of “searching for the self”, his main interest at the time. Entrepreneur Gong Do-hee is afflicted by an enigmatic nightmare. When she gets to the sea village she has seen in her dreams, strange villagers kidnap her and take her to a remote island where a man claiming to be her husband is waiting. Do-hee is stuck in the island and forced to be his wife. When she escapes and returns to Seoul, she discovers that no one remembers her. The urban Do-hee has economic success at the expense of her personal desire while the island Do-hee is allowed desire but no social position. These two Do-hees are both faces of the 70s going through the deformed industrialization. Kim Soo-yong’s signature style of beautiful visuals and straightforward story telling unfolds the surrealistic circumstance of the overlapping of dream and reality and the complex psychology of the characters.
