Program Note
The Good News is a universal story showing the struggle to remain faithful to our own principles, even though it entails great personal sacrifice. The conflict between personal freedom and social commitment has always been present in my movies. And it is also true that it’s a really important matter to me: the possibility of the human being to take wing alone, without moving away too much from the other. It is likely that these elements are present in my work because, after all, human passions are timeless, and we are always telling stories where love and hatred occupy an essential position. -Helena Taberna Miguel, a young priest in Franco’s Spain, finds himself in a “red village,” a target for repression and in need of protection. Hoping for a form or peace, Miguel vows to defend his parishioners against persecution and refuses to have the gospels he so fervently believes in corrupted.
