Program Note
A Seashore Village is the one of Kim Soo-yong’s literary films, adapted from Oh Young-soo’s same titled short story. It lyrically describes lives of women living in untainted village by the sea. Sang-soo, a village hoodlum pursues Hye-soon who becomes a widow after seven days of marriage. Unlike the novel, the film specifically portrays Sang-soo’s courtship and their journey after they leave the village. With a change of the original story, it brings out Sang-soo’s obsession with Hye-soon. A Seashore Village was the first film to prove that a literary film could be successful at the box office, and it definitely had to do with Kim Soo-yong’s effort to distinguish his films from the typical tearjerkers. The film focuses on the character’s desire while handsome camera work constantly catches the beauty of Korean nature at the same time. A Seashore Village sympathized the contemporary audience with the literary films retreating to the past. (Park Ji-yeon)
