White God is a film silently criticizing dog abuse, through the friendship between a 13-year-old girl and her dog, Hagen. But more than a simple critique, the film shines with wit and imagination in this story about the counter-attack by dogs. It is almost gratifying to see the dogs, which have been dominated and betrayed by humans, escape and become free. In other words, the atrocity perpetrated by the humans is that serious. The first scene, a prologue of sorts, begins with a girl riding her bike being followed by a group of dogs. This opening sequence is deliberately ambiguous, signifying the variability of the relationship between man and dog, as well as that between all masters and slaves. The film also touches on sociality, as there are many abandoned dogs in the streets of Budapest. This is Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczos sixth feature film, and it won the Prize Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
