Program Note
April 1980, a month before the Gwangju democratic movement; a number of miners in Kangwon province, who were picketing for the elimination of the government-sponsored labor union, were deliberately run over by a police car. In turn, the miners unlawfully occupy the police station, and when some miners start to raid an armory, the situation worsens. The police begin to ruthlessly arrest the miners and begin to torture them, even sexually harassing some of the female laborers. In the end, the miners are framed with the charge of being North Korean spies. However, due to the atrocity that followed-the massacre of members of the Gwangju democratic movement-the incident remained forgotten for years, both by the press and the general populace. For the miners who engaged in the demonstration, however, the incident forever changed their lives. Twenty years after the incident, the miners come together to revisit the past. The film, shot from the director’s own perspective (via her narration), visits all available witnesses and those involved: the miners, the boss of the mining company, the police chief in charge, and the martial law commandant. Although the incident remains forgotten by many, watching the struggle of the miners one will realize that their struggle continues to this day. (Hong Hyosook)
