Program Note
There have been many stories about the revolution of 1949 and subsequent changes in China. However, most of these ′stories′ fail to escape the trappings of an ideological viewpoint. In particular, the stories of those who had to settle in Taiwan against their will remain untold. Hsiao Chu-Chen tells us how the ideological war left grave scars on everyone involved- those who participated by force or voluntarily. At the end of the civil war in China, the director′s father joins the army to head back home. However, he is forced to remain in Taiwan. After 40 years of separation and yearning, he returns, only to realize his homeland is gone forever. He cannot even find his mother′s silver hairpin, the only object that holds the painful memories about his family parted by force. When the director′s father reunites with his old army friends at the veterans hospital, their voices do not speak of anger-nor do they shed any tears. Only the sound of a sad song flows in the atmosphere. (Nam In-Young)
