Yang’s debut feature is also Christopher Doyle’s debut as feature film cinematographer. Jia-Li’s (Sylvia Chang) husband has disappeared, a hint at a beach suggests that he was drowned at the sea but no body was found. The film focus not on the search of the husband, but through the reunion of Jia-Li who has lost her husband and her brother’s ex-girlfriend, a successful pianist (Hu Yin-Meng), the two women share hindsight on life and growing up, and the struggle they face whether they abide or defy the traditions in their romance and marriage. Yang’s deliberation on changes in the traditions of Taiwanese society and family; its milieu of contemplation and reflection has surpassed the melancholic tone of traditional Taiwanese films on women. Director

Edward Yang

Edward Yang is one of the most renowned film directors from Taiwan. Born in Shanghai in 1947, Yang moved to Taipei with his family in 1949. After majoring in electrical engineering at college, he moved to the US to study computer design. He worked as a microcomputer and systems designer for seven years. He returned to Taiwan in 1981 to begin a new career as a filmmaker and made his debut feature with That Day, on the Beach in 1983. His films include The Terroriser (1986), A Brighter Summer Day (1991), A Confucian Confusion (1994) and Mahjong (1996). His latest film, Yi yi: A One and a Two... (2000) was invited to numerous film festivals including Cannes, Toronto, New York, Pusan and Karlovy Vary, and won the prize for the Best Director at Cannes in 2000.
