Program Note
A girl tries to evade police arrest by jumping from a window. A young passerby comes to her assistance. Afterwards, this young man blows up a series of the girl’s headshots, reminding the audience of Michelangelo Antonioni after That Day on The Beach. Totally bored as the girl is locked inside the house by her mother, she picks up the phone and makes random calls, claiming to be a man’s mistress. The call is picked up by a female writer, who not only has doubts on her own marriage but gives inspiration for her writing. Through the film’s multi-perspective and storylines that cross paths occasionally, Yang states that each person can somehow be a “terrorizer”. Totally modernist with an essence, the film sharply dissects the cold and fragile urban human relationships. The Terrorizers was regarded in Taiwan as Yang’s finest work in the 1980s.
