Program Note
One day, the happy life of a childless couple is disturbed by the mother of the husband. With her strict belief that children are the standard to measure one’s happiness, she insists that Leila must persuade her husband to get a second wife. Leila even prepares her husband for an interview for such a marriage, being a good first wife and daughter-in-law. However, she breaks down on her husband’s wedding day to the second wife. Different opinions can be spoken about the polygamy that is allowed in several Islamic countries, but the director’s intention isn’t to criticize or question polygamy. Instead, she describe, with the delicate hands of a woman, how polygamy affects families when there is an infertility issue involved and the social/personal struggle and psychological changes in women under such a law. Mehrjui surely deserves her fame as a director for women when she describes in surprising detail the innermost psychological state and confusion of a woman that is impossible for people of other cultures to imagine.
