Program Note
Dariush Mehrjui observes the life of a middle class middle-aged intellectual in Iranian society through Hamoun. He has made compromises in his dreams as a young man such as love, career and family, to deal with reality and at the door of his middle-age, with his youth and beauty disappearing, he is consumed with the disappointments of life. Hamoun’s life faces crisis when his wife, a famous artist, asks for a divorce. By Iranian law, a wife can only leave with the permission of her husband and Hamoun immerses himself in questioning and analyzing the psychology of love instead of accepting the reality he wishes to deny. Hamoun is a comedy with brilliant expression of the psyche of a man, and it is a drama with an insight on middle-aged life. The film brought commercial success and the praise of critics to Mehrjui who was in a slump, and it is the direct reason her mania group has formed. (Mina Oak)
