Program Note
The new east Taipei suburbia is the background for A Confucian Confusion. Through quick tempo and unending dialogues, it delves into the shrewd notions of romance and money of the nouveau middle-class, even art and religion has become devious. Under the camera of Yang, Taipei is city under excessive disguise, where everyone is happily scrutinizing the others but try hard to conceal their own selves. Its deadpan humor is reminiscence of Woody Allen or Robert Altman, while Yang is more concerned of the twist of morality. Though this urban comedy suffers from its blatant long didactics and exaggerated acting, Yang should still be credited for his courage for treading new grounds. (WEN Tien-Hsiang)
