The classic case of friends on opposing side of the law is the basis for Michael Kang’s follow-up to the coming of age comedy-drama The Motel. John Kim is a lawyer at a Manhattan law firm investigating a Korean gangland murder. Once he enters into this alternative city, he comes to find a glamour in the life that’s drawing him from his chic mid-town existence. When he befriends the equally ambitious Mike Juhn ? possibly a killer, they enter into a game of cat and mouse wherein each is willing to go to extremes to achieve his ends. Kang’s portrait of a little-known underworld is vivid and compelling, and beautifully rendered by cinematographer Simon Coull, and his understanding of John ?simultaneously of and apart from the Korean community he’s infiltrating? is complete.
