Program Note
Referred to as a burlesque drama, The Art of Negative Thinking is a razor-sharp black comedy that subverts the correctness of positivism and revels in reality and the acceptance of it. When thirty-something Geirr is confined to a wheelchair following a car accident, he abjectly refuses to see the silver lining in his situation. His willful misery drives his girlfriend Ingvild to contact a state-sanctioned positive thinking psychologist, and the stage is set for a battle of wills ? with Geirr facing off against a support group ironically harboring endless resentment. While simultaneously confronting the difficulties surrounding sudden disability and lampooning them, the film is a cathartic, clear-eyed examination of emotional and physical adaptation. A witty, poignant and incisive debut that avoids cliche, stereotype and quick judgment.
