Program Note
The 1994 genocide in Rwanda has been explored in several films over the past several years, most notably in the high profile Hotel Rwanda and Shooting Dogs. But Lee Isaac Chung’s Munyurangabo is the most elegant and moving so far ? as well as being the least afraid to tackle the complex moral, social, and emotional ramifications of that ugly incident. Spoken entirely in Kinyarwanda, the film tells the story of two friends, Munyurangabo and Sangwa, trying to deal with their pasts. A stolen machete sends the two first to Sangwa’s home village and to his disapproving parents, and later to Munyurangabo’s destination as he seeks revenge for the murder of his parents. Shot in an incredible 11 days, the film is heartbreaking, infuriating, and is possessed of a veracity that many films on the subject lack. Featuring stunning performances by non-professionals Jeff Rutagengwa and Eric Ndorunkundiye.
