Program Note
As the First World War rages far away from her rural home, Camille follows along through letter she receives from her husband fighting on the front. When he suddenly ends their relationship, she decides to find out why ? in person. Disguising herself as a man and avoiding the police, Camille heads for the front line. But along the way, she has her eyes opened to realities she had no idea existed by a group of soldiers that become her companions. Actor-director Bozon places a woman at the center of the action, and with it the conflicts that arise when she is unable to express herself as a woman. By using song in key moments, Bozon boldly and innovatively illustrates the camaraderie of the combatants moving through an otherworldly France, and while never confronting the horrors of armed conflict head on, creates a palpable sense of continuing warfare.
