Increasing rage defines the family at the heart of Counterparts. Cop Georg is married to schoolteacher Anne, a compulsively angry woman. Her children fear her outbursts, and her husband tolerates them with reticence. Georg has constructed an image of his perfect family and is terrified of the truth being revealed. Trapped inside an impenetrable bubble of their own making, Georg and Anne battle for control, recognition, and peace. Director Bonny explains, “Counterparts is about dependence, about love, about fear... Violence is just a sort of nucleus the story is centered around. Physical aggression is not the big issue in this movie. But it‘s like a smoldering fire that sparks off the story over and over again, a constant embarrassment to the protagonists, reminding them of their inabilities. Everything must be hidden from the outside world, which puts their relationship under enormous pressure. There‘s no way out of this situation.
