In the classic era of Shanghai city, a filmmaker Junchu loses his lover by car accident just before he proposes to her. Nine months later, Junchu marries Susan to calm his mother’s superstitious fears. Despite Susan’s fervent cooking and cleaning, her husband refuses even to set eyes on her, spending most of his evenings up in the attic forbidden to everyone. But eerie events-mysterious sounds, the smell of incense and the appearance of incantatory boards-surrounding the room needle her.
