Program Note
What makes a film new and original? It is probably based on how much the film goes against and breaks existing forms.
This film follows the main character’s life in a documentary-style form. The title itself seems somewhat prejudicial as it captures Japan’s imperialism and colonial policies. The film was covered under a veil with absolutely no information available until its release, and it is sure to be an object of discussion and criticism. It will be set up very smoothly, unlike films with unexpected shocking endings at the climax like The Sixth Sense and The Others.
The film sets out to face off against existing categories and genres. On top of dealing with the current social and political problems Japan has, the film solves the meaning of existence through a perfectly-fitting comedy. As expected, Hitoshi Matsumoto, top Japanese comedian and genius artist, promises bursts of laughter in the long stretch. Although Hitoshi Matsumoto is destined to be compared with Takeshi Kitano, Dai Nipponjin will nonetheless be deemed a distinctly new film of a different dimension.
