Program Note
The last film of the trilogy on love by James Lee, following Before We Fall in Love Again and Things We Do When We Fall in Love. James Lee, one of the new generation of independent filmmakers in Malaysia, takes three couples living together to talk about love in this film. Three couples, caught in a still camera, repeat their conversations pleading to marry, refusing the idea of marriage, and questioning if they’re happy as they are. Their conversations are crammed with repeating pressure, tenacious blame, and obscure answers. They have passed the period of infatuation and passion and now are left with only reality. They well know that they have come to a moment when they must make decisions for the future but still go on harping on love. For them, already living with their partners, marriage doesn’t cause radical change in their lifestyle. Although they know it well, in the moment of decision and choice, they still suffer from emotion and relationship, responsibility, and endless anxiety and doubt about the future. (Mina Oak)
