Program Note
In Malaysian history, the communist party played a big role in fighting and claiming independence against Japanese occupation and the English colonists. The Malaysian government tries to take advantage of the fact that the majority of its citizens are Malay Islam. They publicize that the communists are mostly Chinese without religion, but in fact, most of them are Malay Islam. In the mid 1950s, 10 units of the communist army regrouped in southern Thailand but they were unable to return to Malaysia. The film follows their lives in a southern Thai village. As in The Last Communist, it shows Amir Muhammad’s interest in those who are abandoned in the margins of history and the fact that the courageous attempt to honor them is constantly carried out. Village People Radio Show is banned from screening in Malaysia. (Mina Oak)
