From a burgeoning Eastern European cinema industry that boasts Laila Pakalnina, Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, and Agnes Kocsis comes this omnibus of shorts by some of Latvia’s most promising young filmmakers. Four short films tell the story of one man’s life through four defining moments from childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. A single narrative is broken up and connected loosely through several reference points that explore the major phases of what could be anyone’s existence, beginning with the innocence of youth, moving to the freedom and choice of adulthood, and ultimately ending with the regret of old age. The simple, unfussy storytelling and breathtaking photography relate universal themes and issues from four distinct voices that cohere nonetheless to tell a singular tale.
