Taking place over the course of one day, the disintegration of a contemporary Geneva family is told from the perspective of its three members: a betrayed wife, her adulterous husband, and their son. Serge regularly begins his day by kissing his wife goodbye and then detouring to visit with Mathilde. When his wife Pietra stops in at home, she finds the evidence of his infidelity and leaves without confronting him. Young Vlad witnesses his father going toward another home, causing confusion. In the 24 hours that begin with a minor traffic accident, the family will shatter and expose Jacob Berger’s fully realized characters’ weaknesses and feelings of guilt. Berger’s cautionary tale of the repercussions of our actions mixes drama and satire, and is perfectly set within a cold suburban apartment block reflective of the family’s disengaged lives.
