Program Note
Written specifically for legendary actress Danuta Szaflarska, Time to Die is about the elderly Aniela, finally the mistress of her own home after the last Communist regime-mandated border moves out of her crumbling villa. Overjoyed at the prospect of having her home to herself, Aniela, sadly, has no one to share her pleasure with. Watching Aniela’s dream realized at the end of her life ? only to have it crushed ? is both heartbreaking and somehow uplifting. With her dog as her only company and isolated from the world inside her home, Aniela’s conversations with the dog raise questions of her present, her past, and whether or not this moment is a triumph or a defeat. Kedzierzawska’s explorations of women on the fringes of society continues, and 91-year-old Szaflarska’s mastery of her craft is evident in her touching portrayal.
