Program Note
Themes of trust and betrayal inform this drama about 12 recovering drug addicts in a remote farmhouse. An aura of suspicion and lies hangs over the characters, with Roman, Milan, and Tom at the center of the storm. When Roman checks into the rehab facility, he disrupts a fine balance struck by the other patients. Milan’s open hostility toward Roman makes it clear they share a difficult past, and his appearance leads Tom to recall a friend’s death. He later accuses Roman ? or perhaps Milan ? of murder. The subjectivity of truth and an inability to trust any of the characters completely creates a tension throughout the film that never abates. Director and writer Robert Sedlacek deftly manipulates the audience’s expectations and perceptions, and maintains an atmosphere of simmering threat.
