Program Note
“It’s the end of my trilogy. After The Decline of the American Empire, The Barbarian Invasions what next? The dark ages. I get the feeling we’re headed for a kind of new Middle Ages. That’s a theme I wanted to develop because what do the Middle Ages represent? War against Islam, the infidels, the crusades... That’s where we’re at now.” ? Denys Arcand In a future Quebec defined by ultra-political correctness and cowed by a mysterious epidemic, Jean-Marc Leblanc ? a non-descript civil servant with disinterested daughters and a power-wife ? lives in a fantasy world where he’s irresistible to women and a successful writer. One of the world’s most astute observers of modern mores and behavior, director Arcand turns a satirical eye toward increasingly fascistic bureaucracy and its dehumanizing impact.
