Program Note
Adela is a single mother living in the country with her father. She opts to move to Madrid for a better life, finding a roommate in Ines. Ines’ mother is Antonia, a widow and mother of three daughters. When Adela is on a bus that has been targeted for a terrorist bomb, what little hope she had dissolves, and she returns to the country. In the second narrative strand, Antonia must deal with a grave illness in one of her daughters, and monetary demands from another. Jaime Rosales’ understanding of how we avoid confrontation and deeper issues is manifested in protracted silences bearing the unspoken and the solitude of the women. By using what he refers to as polyvision ? dividing the screen ? Rosales finds time and space for both women’s emotional perspectives, and in doing so creates a rich, insightful tapestry that reveals those hidden thoughts and feelings.
