“Kratki stiki”, Short Circuits’s native title, in Slovenian has several meanings: one is the usual electrical failure. A second is “brief contact,” and more metaphorically “misunderstanding.” A bus driver on the night route finds an abandoned infant near one of his stops. A divorce picks up his son for the weekend. A doctor strikes up a friendship with a quadriplegic. These are the people that serve as the basis for Janez Lapajne’s examination of human relationships, sympathies, fears, guilt, and wonder. Like he did in Rustling Landscapes, Lapajne focuses on the emotional exchanges between characters and where they come from. Short Circuits swept the Vesna Awards at the 9th Festival of Slovenian Film, taking home the best film, director, screenplay, and actress (for Tjasa Zeleznik) prizes, as well as several others.
