Program Note
September is a coming-of-age drama set against the turmoil and tension that resulted in a shift in Australia’s race relations of the late-1960s following the devastating changes to the Federal Pastoral Industry Award. Ed is white and Paddy is Aboriginal. Paddy’s family lives and works ? like many Aboriginals at the time ? on a barter system with Ed’s family farm. Growing up together, the two share a friendship based on what boys naturally do as they grow into young men. When legislation is passed that crystallizes the fundamental differences between the two, differences that the boys have a hard time overcoming, the bubble that was their pure existence bursts. September is a film about loyalty, choice, and the power of the outside world to impress itself upon us.
