Program Note
The team that scripted 2003’s critically acclaimed The Best of Youth, Stefano Rulli and Sandro Petraglia, revisits Italy’s turbulent 1960s and ‘70s, once again with two brothers on opposite sides of the politics that divided the country at that time. In the small town of Latina, the right-leaning troublemaker Accio and the left-leaning socially active Manrico battle their way through their youth to come out with their fraternal bond intact. My Brother Is an Only Child is considerably lighter than any of Rulli and Petraglia’s early work on the same themes, and plays out like a more personal story that focuses on the two young men as much as it does the larger issues of the time. A breezy, engaging character study of two men who learn they are more alike than not.
