Program Note
Making of revolves around three characters: Bahta, a breakdancer with his eyes on Europe; Latfi, an actor playing Bahta; and his director Nouri (director Bouzid playing himself). Bahta’s constrained Tunisian life has given birth to dreams of fleeing the country and getting away from his critical father and the suspicious police. When the US invades Iraq, his hopes are dashed, and he’s soon identified as an ideal recruit for a fundamentalist terror cell. Woven with Bahta’s story is one about a director making a film with that identical plot ? and where he’s at creative odds with the actor playing Bahta. The dual meaning in the film’s title ? Making of ? gives Bouzid ample room to make timely comments on art, politics, and misguided faith, and affirm that fundamentalism is everybody’s problem. An award winner at the Tribeca and Carthage film festivals in 2007.
