Program Note
After Indonesian fisherman-human trafficker Ramelan abandons a boatload of illegal immigrants off the coast of Australia, fate conspires to reunite him with two of his victims as they try to stay one step ahead of the law. Cambodian Arun and Iraqi Youssif is each the last of his group left uncaptured, and find only each other to turn to for aid until Ramelan joins them. The uneasy trio then commit to eluding their pursuers. Lucky Miles is a political film wrapped in the disguise of a buddy comedy, inspired in part by the pro-globalization The Lexus and the Olive Tree and the late-‘80s story of wandering refugees in the Pilbara region. Rowland’s exploration of life in the overlooked shadow of globalization wins over viewers with its intensely human characters and light political touch.
