Program Note
“The changing world of today’s Macedonia is bringing new dilemmas to what it once was, a very traditional society. As an answer to the great confusion of the past decade brought by conflict, war and transition, many negative aspects of our society have come to the surface. The deterioration of the family structure and overbearing poverty have created an atmosphere of selfishness and cruelty. The three sisters are trying to find their place as women and equal citizens in this deteriorating world that surrounds them.” - Teona Mitevska
Sapho is a modern, promiscuous woman in search of any kind of connection at all. Her sister Slavica is a recovering heroin addict. Afrodita is the mute sister willing to make grave sacrifices to save them all in the post-communist industrial town of Titov Veles. A moving film about sacrifice and belonging in the face of devastating change and a poisoned environment.
