Program Note
In Uckermark, in the northeast of Germany, 16-year-old Lars lives a quiet existence with his father Henrik. It is their plan to convert their old barn into a wedding hotel, something sniffed at and tolerated by the other locals. With Christmas coming, Lars prepares to head to Berlin to visit his mother. On the way he meets Marie, and he abandons his plans for the city. At home again, Lars discovers his aunt Jana curiously already there, and Lars’ mother and her new lover soon join the awkward trio. As director Reyels explains, “[Lars] wants that the icebound begins to move. This is symbolized by coldness and snow. Lars realizes that something is strange in his family and he does not want it like this anymore…” The would-be location for the celebration of love soon devolves into a space for emotional chaos ? as well as for change.
