Program Note
Set sometime in the early 1800s, Horse Thieves is a classic revenge thriller with brothers Jakub and Vladimir, and horse thief brothers Roman and Elias at its heart. When Vladimir is killed and Jakub has his horse stolen, he is released from his Cossack company, and vows revenge. Playing out in three segments, the film is a brutal, raw, and emotional piece, complemented by punishing but beautiful physical landscapes. Micha Wald has crafted an epic of brotherly bonds and self-determination, and the universal aspects of that relationship. “The film gives their full due to universal feelings, such as love, jealousy and guilt, and stretches them as far as possible,” Wald explains to Cinema Belgium. “The characters are slightly lost, pushed to their limits: cruelty soon takes the place of tenderness, vengeance becomes the last resort to carry on living, and tracking down a man the final objective…”
