Program Note
“Josie is really a contemporary village idiot character but the Irish village doesn’t really have any place for him anymore. The film is really about those transformations in rural Ireland, which make Josie, and people like Josie, rootless or homeless… Josie is an incredibly lonely character. But he is also basically happy. So, he is a complex, unusual, funny, sad, moving, intriguing kind of character.” ? Lenny Abrahamson Lonely gas station attendant Josie has his life changed forever when teenaged David joins him at the station for a summer job. Josie is soon confronted by feelings in himself he’s never experienced and isn’t equipped to handle. The small town that tolerates Josie is the backdrop for this film about the loneliness of rural life and its lack of a place for people like Josie within it.
