Program Note
Fifteen years ago, Carlos Saura began looking at music and dance, its history and identity in Sevillanas (1992), Flamenco (1995), Tango (1998), Salome (2002) and Iberia (2005). The subject of his latest film is the Portuguese Fado, a “saudade” that all but defines the nation. Using Lisbon as the jumping off point, Saura examines the link between the city and the music, looks at its origins and evolution from its Brazilian and African roots, and theorizes on the direction the music is going with the help of modern Fadistas. This is a film for anyone who enjoyed Mika Kaurismaki’s Brasileirinho, Fatih Akin’s Crossing the Bridge, or Wim Wenders’ Buena Vista Social Club. With a propulsive, infectious soundtrack featuring some of fado’s brightest lights and enduring legends, including Mariza, Camane, Lila Downs, Lura, Caetano Veloso, and Chico Buarque.
